I have had a life long love of sailing. Maybe it started when my parents read to me the story of Scuppers (pictured on my home page), who found his way to a life of happiness at sea in The Sailor Dog. Whenever I had the chance, I would get out on the water, first in small boats and now in larger cruising yachts. Since 1989 I have cruised on WAVE DANCER off the waters of Cape Ann from Maine to Rhode Island. During the cold months, I have chartered yachts in the Virgin Islands since 1986. When I became weary of my career as a doctor practicing emergency medicine, I decided to change my course and turn sailing into a profession. As a first step, I acquired a US Coast Guard 50 ton Master's license in 2002. This has opened the door to chartering my own boat, WAVE DANCER out of Rockport MA and to serving as captain aboard APPLEDORE III , a 62 foot wooden schooner doing day sails out of Rockport with up to 25 passengers. While sailing close to shore can be challenging, I believe that a real sailor needs to venture offshore to round out his experience. After my first "blue water" passage in 1999 (1500 miles from Virginia to Tortola) I have continued to make offshore sailing a part of my life on a regular basis, participating annually in the Caribbean 1500 and Atlantic Cup rallies. Through all of this, I have seen many beautiful places and met many wonderful people. As I look forward, I hope to keep sailing for many years to come, until I am an ancient salty dog. Some might say I have become Scuppers.
